![]() The company hit their goal of $25,000 within a few days and reached $175,000 by the end of the campaign. To validate the product, Purple created a Kickstarter video last October. “When you sleep on a Purple™, you’re sleeping on more than 15 patents and a dream come true for the Pearces’.” “This is the culmination of their life’s work,” Bischoff says of the mattress. They began developing seat cushions and a mattress that would share this ultra-comfy invention with the world. When the Pearces’ organized the material in small columns in a grid formation, they found a durable product that provided excellent support as well as pressure-relieving comfort. This material promised greater comfort and support than traditional beds made of latex, foam or springs. They named the company Purple after the color of the patented Hyper-Elastic Polymer™-the ultra-stretchy, yet durable, gel-like top layer of what would become their signature product: the Purple ™ Bed. They called it Hyper-Elastic Polymer™ and Purple was born. Originally, the Pearce brothers banded together to create cushioning technologies that Fortune 500 companies have licensed to make wheelchairs, shoes, and medical devices more comfortable.īut the Pearce brothers knew they could do more.Īlthough they were already helping millions of people live more comfortably, the pair always dreamed of inventing the perfect mattress-one that combined the benefits of both firm and soft mattresses to alleviate pain, provide the best sleep imaginable, and all for thousands of dollars less than the price of leading mattresses.Īfter 20 years and a series of discoveries and product developments, the Pearce brothers invented what they thought was the best mattress technology in the world. “Tony and Terry want to help people who have problems with pain and sleeping.” “They want their inventions to do good,” Bischoff says. The Pearces’ 20-year examination of comfort products came from their deep-seeded desire to help others. The brothers came together with deep knowledge sets-Tony an aerospace engineer (us normal folk call them rocket scientists) and Terry an expert in materials and manufacturing-to solve a problem every person in the world experiences: a bad night’s sleep. He’s talking about Tony and Terry Pearce, the founders of the comfort company, Purple, who have created possibly the most innovative sleep technology in decades and achieved phenomenal ecommerce success in just six months. “It’s something that took them 20 years to perfect,” says Dan Bischoff, Purple’s Director of Communications. The thickness of the grid varies depending on which mattress you go with.Like a lot of overnight success stories, this one was years in the making. The polymer is stretchy and is extruded into a grid pattern. Purple uses a patented hyper-elastic polymer for the primary comfort material of this mattress and all other Purple mattresses as well. Names aside, here are three other ways that Purple separates itself from the pack: #1. In a way, “different” is one of the first things that Purple wants you to think about their company when you hear the name. Although I’m partially kidding, the unique name does give some hints to the different types of sales tactics and branding strategies that Purple going through to stand out. The Purple mattress is different from other mattress competitors in a couple of ways. ![]() Purple regular sitting How is the Original Purple Different? The Purple mattress is a simple combination of foam and the patented Purple hyper-elastic polymer grid. ![]() The hybrid design and thicker hyper-elastic polymer grid will both lead to better performance for heavier persons. That said, if you are over 300 pounds I would strongly recommend one of the Purple Hybrid mattresses, ideally the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or 4. That being said, exceeding this recommendation will not void the 10-year warranty. Over 300 lbs? According to Purple, there is no weight limit that the Purple will support although they do recommend 300 pounds per person or 600 pounds total. As you can see, the Purple has widespread appeal across the sleeper spectrum. We have a table, shown below, that we use to help sleepers decide if a mattress is right for them. Being a 5 out of 10, the Purple mattress is still considered suitable for a wide range of sleepers, regardless of weight or sleeping position.
